On the Railway

I like to start by saying that I'm showing you how I built my layout. I don't offer these construction examples as the end all be all, just the way I do it. If you have developed or know of a better way, I'd love to hear it or see it, so I encourage you to e-mail me with your thoughts and construction techniques. Also if anything I'm attempting to explain is unclear to you, please contact me. I offer this work in the spirit of encouragement to try to help others to grow as modelers. Keep in mind that none of my work is perfect even to my standards. But I keep trying. You'll find lots of mistakes so please keep the rivet counting to the minimum.

The Plan

I have always liked Lynn Westcott's plan #95 Hungryhorse Logging in the Kalmbach Publications Book "101 Track Plans" and I've decided to try building it. I've included the plan from the book if you don't have it in your library ( what's wrong with you ) and then made the modifications I felt where necessary for N scale and the size of my room. These modifications, done in 3rd Planit, included widening the isles for 1 to 1 scale people and adding an isle in the center area for access to the staging I've added under the apex of the main line. Also I've added some Nn3 logging activities ( not all planned as yet ) and mirrored the whole plan so it fit better in my room configuration and rearranged the yards for the type of traffic I'm planning.
